Morning (Professor David J Cooke)
I will examine the development of the construct of psychopathy and
discuss why it is relevant to those working within criminal-justice
settings. I will emphasise the importance of the construct, both
in relation to risk assessment, and in relation to treatment interfering
behaviours. I will use video tape extracts to illustrate the key
features of the disorder. I will discuss some of the procedures
that can be used to collect information to form a diagnosis: in
particular, I will describe interviewing strategies and methods
of file review.
Afternoon (Dr. Henrik Andershed)
I will present developmental theories of psychopathy and research
about causal background and risk factors. I will also present and
discuss recent behavior genetic research focused on the relative
importance of heritability and environment behind the development
of psychopathic personality. I will discuss research extending
the construct of psychopathy to youths and explore the usefulness
of basic research on psychopathic personality in general population
samples. Finally, I will discuss potential protective factors.
Note: This is a brief introductory workshop and is not designed
to train people in the use of any particular assessment procedure
such as the PCL-R.
