The workshop will concentrate on the assessment of risk
of juvenile antisocial and violent behaviour. We will start with an overall
explanation of the manual for the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk
in Youth (SAVRY) and the role of psychopathy in the assessment of violence
risk in youth.
After the first exploration the perception and application of risk- and
protective factors by clinicians working with juvenile delinquents will be
the theme in the first part of this workshop. What are the risk factors perceived
as most relevant by clinicians and do they perceive different factors for
different types of juvenile delinquents? We will also examine the perception
of the risk and protective factors present in the SAVRY and of the perception
of protective factors more in general. The identification of possible promising
risk- or protective factors by clinicians will be discussed.
After the perception of risk and protective factors we will look into
the application of risk factors in risk assessment by the same clinicians
and see or there are differences between the perception and the application
of risk- and protective factors.
The second part of the workshop is focused on presenting a study where SAVRY
was used to predict violence among a group of substance abusing adolescents.
An in depth analysis of the predictive validity of the SAVRY and the different
subscales will be presented. Comparisons with other risk assessment tools
e.g. the psychopathy checklist will also be conducted. Detailed results and
clinical consequences of assessing violence risk among youth will be presented
and discussed.
